In 2023, the World Economic Forum released a Future of Jobs report that explored how jobs and skills will evolve over the next five years.
It’s no surprise that there’s a lot of anxiety abounding around the state of careers in the industry. The report confirms:
44% of workers’ core skills are expected to change in the next five years.
And boy does it feel like it.
The good news is that those of us who have been learning about and specializing in design systems are well ahead of the curve. Here are the top 10 skills predicted to be on the rise:
Creative thinking
Analytical thinking
Technological literacy
Curiosity and lifelong learning
Resilience, flexibility, and agility
Systems thinking
AI and big data
Motivation and self-awareness
Talent management
Service orientation and customer service
Sound familiar? For those working in and on design systems, just about all of these skills are daily practices. Why? Because design systems inherently prepare you for change.
It’s natural to feel despondent sometimes about the shifting nature of our industry, especially if you’re not doing anything new “to adapt” or know what new things to try. But stay the course. Continuing to hone your analytical and creative skills, systems thinking, and growth mindset will serve you well, both now and in the future.
